Vampiric Dictator of the Year

Vladimir Putin was named Time Man of the Year. From faithful reader, Bob:

"He is diminutive—5 ft. 6 in". WTF? That does it, gloves off Time Magazine.
Putin's popularity is an accident created by booming oil riches. When the money stream runs dry and Russia still has Cold War infrastructure and 21st century poverty, his regime will repress not just vocal elites, but the masses it purports to serve. His decision "not to challenge the constitution" and "step down" into a permanent role as Prime Minister must be attacked from every corner of the globle.
Face it, he beat JK Rowlins and Al Gore. That isn't exactly Roosevelt and Churchill."

From John McCain: "I looked into his eyes and saw three letters: a K, a G and a B" (Boston Herald).

Don't Think of a Terrorist

Bob Kerrey is the latest Clinton surrogate to raise the "Obama is a muslim" canard, with the requisite "I know he's not but others might think he is and even if he is even though he says he's not it might be a good thing cause not all of them are terrorists but that would be ok too go ahead and take a chance."

Of course it's a compliment. Misleading, prone to if not intentionally but still forcefully perpetuate a fear among some of foreigners in general and Muslims in particular, but not really meant to discredit him.

Please tell me they are not doing this on purpose.

Are they reading too much of that damn George Lakoff?

Here comes the bride, again and again and again

Ah, the sanctity of marriage.

Quote of the Day

"Barack Obama isn’t some “electable” insider. In fact, if his face were any fresher, they’d charge you 12 bucks for it at the Whole Foods. Barack Obama: smart, fresh, and perfectly willing to marry Bill Clinton."
Matt Bai, NYTimes

Andrew Sullivan writes about Obama in a way that makes me believe it might just happen, and that maybe it should:

" Close-up in this election campaign, Obama is unlikely. From a distance, he is necessary. At a time when America’s estrangement from the world risks tipping into dangerous imbalance, when a country at war with lethal enemies is also increasingly at war with itself, when humankind’s spiritual yearnings veer between an excess of certainty and an inability to believe anything at all, and when sectarian and racial divides seem as intractable as ever, a man who is a bridge between these worlds may be indispensable.

We may in fact have finally found that bridge to the 21st century that Bill Clinton told us about. Its name is Obama."
